John founded Hodgson Pratt & Associates, P.C. (then
Hodgson & Company) in 1974 after several years with Arthur Andersen & Co. and a one-year stint as Assistant Treasurer for the National Association of
Securities Dealers. John became a CPA after graduating from Georgetown
University. He attended post-graduate programs at the Wharton School of Business
and the Duke University Fuqua Business School. John became a Certified Financial
Planner and is a Diplomate in the American College of Forensic Examiners. He is a member of the American Association of Healthcare
Consultants. In the more than 30 years that John has been in practice, he has
worked with clients to solve their business and tax problems, and has helped
them develop long-term business and tax planning strategies. John’s efforts have
guided companies in taking their business in new directions. For example, John
helped one of his clients shift their focus from a low-end produce business to a
high-end specialty produce firm serving international clients. In another
instance, John provided the direction that led a $10 million company to
completely reshape its organizational structure and focus on its more profitable
core business. John provides strategic planning and direction for his clients
and is frequently asked to facilitate company and organization retreats. Over the years, John has been active in professional
organizations. He is one of the few CPA's to have been asked to serve on four
different AICPA committees, including the Not-For-Profit Committee, the Peer
Review Committee, the Ethics Committee and the Practice Management Committee.
John has also been a speaker at numerous state and national organization
seminars and conferences. John enjoys the many community leadership positions he holds
and has been involved with, believing that as a firm which draws its success from the
community, there is a special obligation to put something back. John spent
nearly 20 years on the Board of St. Luke’s Hospital (now Southcoast Health
System), serving as its Chairman for 3 years. John was also Chairman of the
drive to restore New Bedford’s performing arts theatre, the Zeiterion and
was Chairman of the United Way Campaign in 1985. John served as President of the
Board of Friends Academy and Treasurer of the Waterfront Historic Area LeaguE
("WHALE"). He was appointed by then-Governor Dukakis to the Hospital Policy
Review Board of the Massachusetts Rate Setting Commission. John was recognized
for his business and civic contributions to Southcoast by his induction into the
Business Hall of Fame in 1992. John and his wife, Mary have three sons, two daughters, two
grandsons and a chocolate Lab named "Penny," who has been known to be seen in the
office on Saturdays! John likes golf, and sometimes it likes him. He also enjoys
travel, especially to Europe.
